As I write this, my daughter is in labour. What world will that grandchild inherit?
For whatever reasons and however many reasons I found the 2nd Melbourne Lockdown in Melbourne really hard, just too hard. As the rest of Australia recovered from the first lockdown and the Northern Hemisphere opened up to summer, we here in Melbourne plunged into an isolated, long cold winter with a second lockdown. I dreamt travelling beyond my 5k zone. I dreamt of the places I'd visited; warm places, hot places, exotic and erotic places, anywhere away from my backyard. I needed colour. I needed fluro colours that not only shrieked alarm but also made Hi-Vis the lives of the 5 million Melbournians contained within the ring of steel who were doing it hard, alone.
I first submitted the tapestry of Mt Fuji to the Covid Quilt Project in 2020 but ended up reworking large parts of it. Let’s face it, I had the time as I sat there in the vacuum of an isolated, energy sapped, timeless world.
